This Tianhuang seal from the Qianlong reign is carved from exceptionally fine and lustrous Tianhuang stone—its texture soft and unctuous, its color rich like ambered beeswax, displaying the characteristic translucent glow of Tianhuang dong, warm yet restrained, radiant yet never excessive. Long esteemed as the “Emperor of Seal Stones,” Tianhuang of this quality is exceedingly rare.
The seal knob is carved in high relief as a powerful coiled dragon attended by a smaller companion dragon. Their bodies intertwine in dynamic spirals, scales rendered in staggered, meticulously arranged layers. The principal dragon raises its head in commanding majesty, with wide, penetrating eyes, flaring whiskers, and a spirited, soaring posture—an embodiment of imperial sovereignty. The two dragons leap amidst swirling auspicious clouds, symbolizing cosmic harmony and virtuous rulership.
Below the dragon finial, the four sides are adorned with floating ruyi cloud motifs in low relief, their flowing lines echoing the movement of the dragons above. The entire composition is full and harmoniously balanced, executed with vigorous yet refined carving. The natural color gradations and internal veining of the Tianhuang stone are skillfully incorporated into the design, creating a layered rhythm of golden, yellow, and russet tones—an exquisite union of nature’s beauty and master craftsmanship.
The seal face bears a six-character inscription in archaic seal script: “乾隆御览之宝” (Seal for the Qianlong Emperor’s Personal Inspection). The characters are squarely composed, their strokes vigorous, weighty, and archaic in flavor. The carving is deep and forceful, with supple turns that conceal sharp strength, perfectly demonstrating the imperial aesthetic.
This seal was one of the personal seals of the Qianlong Emperor. The designation yulan zhi bao identifies it as a treasure used when the emperor personally reviewed paintings, calligraphy, poetry, and scholarly works. Its significance thus extends beyond imperial authority, representing the emperor’s supreme connoisseurship in the arts. With its rare Tianhuang material, masterful craftsmanship, and distinguished imperial provenance, this seal embodies a triad of values: imperial power, literati elegance, and artistic magnificence.
